Southern islands have different weather patterns - research your specific destination.
Thailand has excellent transportation options. Domestic flights connect major cities affordably. Trains offer scenic journeys but can be slow. Buses range from basic to luxury VIP coaches. In cities, use metered taxis, Grab (ride-sharing), or tuk-tuks (negotiate price first). Bangkok has an efficient BTS Skytrain and MRT subway. Renting a scooter is popular on islands but requires caution.
Remove shoes before entering temples and homes. Dress modestly at religious sites - cover shoulders and knees. Never touch anyone's head or point feet at people or Buddha images. Show respect to the Thai Royal Family - criticism is illegal. The traditional "wai" greeting (hands together, slight bow) shows respect. Avoid public displays of affection. Stay calm - losing your temper is considered very rude.
The currency is Thai Baht (THB). ATMs are everywhere with reasonable fees. Credit cards accepted in hotels and restaurants but cash is preferred for street food and markets. Thailand is very affordable - budget travelers can manage on $30-50/day, mid-range $50-100/day. Bargaining is expected in markets but not in malls or restaurants. Tipping isn't mandatory but appreciated - round up or leave 20-50 baht.
Light, breathable clothing for hot weather. Modest clothes for temples (long pants/skirts, covered shoulders). Comfortable walking shoes and sandals. Swimwear for beaches. Light rain jacket or umbrella. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat. Insect repellent. Small daypack. Adapter for Type A, B, C, or O plugs. Bring any prescription medications - pharmacies are well-stocked but may not have specific brands.
Thailand is generally very safe for tourists. Petty theft can occur - watch belongings in crowded areas. Avoid tap water - drink bottled water. Be cautious with street food hygiene but don't miss out - it's usually safe and delicious. Dengue fever exists - use mosquito repellent. Healthcare is excellent and affordable, especially in Bangkok. Travel insurance is essential. Emergency number is 191 for police, 1669 for ambulance.
