Birthplace of the walking safari with exceptional leopard sightings and authentic wilderness experiences
South Luangwa National Park is widely regarded as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and the birthplace of the walking safari. Located in eastern Zambia, this 9,050 square kilometer park is centered around the meandering Luangwa River, which acts as a lifeline for an incredible concentration and variety of wildlife.
The park is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of leopards in Africa, offering exceptional opportunities to observe these elusive cats. South Luangwa is also home to large populations of elephants, buffalo, hippos, and the endemic Thornicroft's giraffe found nowhere else on Earth. The park supports over 400 bird species, making it a premier birdwatching destination.
Walking safaris, pioneered here in the 1950s by legendary guide Norman Carr, remain the park's signature experience. These intimate bush walks allow visitors to experience the African wilderness on foot, tracking animals, learning about smaller creatures and plants, and feeling truly connected to nature in a way that vehicle safaris cannot match.
The Luangwa Valley's remote location and limited development have preserved its wild character. Night drives reveal a different world of nocturnal predators including lions, leopards, hyenas, and the rare African wild dog. The park's seasonal transformation from lush green paradise in the wet season to golden grasslands in the dry season offers dramatically different experiences throughout the year.
