Experience the otherworldly beauty of Africa's largest salt pans and witness the great zebra migration
The Makgadikgadi Pans are among the largest salt flats in the world, covering over 12,000 square kilometers of the Kalahari Desert. This surreal landscape was once part of an ancient super-lake that dried up thousands of years ago, leaving behind a vast expanse of white salt crust.
During the dry season, the pans transform into an endless white desert where mirages shimmer on the horizon. The wet season brings dramatic transformation as the pans flood, attracting thousands of flamingos and one of Africa's most spectacular wildlife migrations - over 25,000 zebras journey here from the Okavango Delta.
The area is home to unique desert-adapted wildlife including meerkats, brown hyenas, and aardvarks. The surrounding grasslands support large herds of wildebeest, springbok, and gemsbok, while predators like lions and cheetahs follow the migrations.
Beyond wildlife, the Makgadikgadi offers extraordinary experiences: sleep under the stars on the salt pans, visit ancient baobab trees, interact with habituated meerkat families, and enjoy some of the clearest night skies on Earth - perfect for stargazing and astrophotography.
